Potions gone Wrong

A deadpan expression covered Kresnica’s face for a few split seconds as the cauldron bubbled over, and started expanding over the heavy wooden table.  “No, no no no no no nooo!”  Panic set in as he quickly stepped back looking both horrified and sorry as the concoction kept expanding, further over the table, and onto the floor.  This hadn’t been the right reaction at all!  This was exactly opposite of what should have happened.  The potion should have barely expanded, and should have shrunk into something spongy, and edible.  Not something that was rapidly approaching the text books on the bookcase, intent on consuming them.  The books!  Kres glanced over at them in horror, eyes wide, hoping that they had been treated alchemically to resist damage, and that he’d not have to pay the cost of them off in servitude.

Not knowing what to do in this situation, the enivi let out a small, short ‘meepmh’ as his thoughts flashed back to how awesome his day had been before this disaster.  The first lesson he had was a simple classroom lesson on how to store energy and the theories behind it.  The details on the theory had been interesting, and he simply couldn’t take his mind, or attention,  off of the practical applications of spell charging during the lesson.  He had sat entranced, ears forward, and hooves ever so slowly clicking on the table as he focused on not missing a thing.  That particular lesson stuck well.  It wasn’t too long before he could put a small amount of magic, or a large amount, into a scroll, staff, or anything really.  Each object that he managed to charge ended up with a faint flickering reddish glow, and emitted a calm gentle warmth that might remind someone of sitting next to a fire, or mulled cider on a cold day.

A single poke to his shoulders had brought him back to his senses, as a non descript instructor had stepped in, taken stock of the situation, and somehow managed to at least tame the expanding foam potion so it wasn’t taking over the books.  This enivi smiled a little, shaking her head a little, and then motioned that Kres should follow her, as she started towards a bit of a wash area, and indicated he should clean off his tail and hooves, which had both been covered in the foam.  He looked a touch sheepish, and proceeded to trip over his hooves and into the washing water unintentionally. The splash soaked his hair, and hide, leaving himself dripping all over.    He sighed, looking defeated, and then worked on ridding himself of the concoction that had stuck to him.  Most of the foam that had gotten stuck on him washed right out of his fur, and dissolved into the washing water, the only indication that it was magical in nature, the fact that the washing water was now yellow, instead of a clear non-color.  Attempting to regain some of his composure, he stepped onto the cobblestones of the floor, and shook himself as dry as he could.  His hair was still damp and stuck to his neck at awkward angles, and his fur now bunched in spiky groups, but at least he had somehow managed to survive that indecent without too much trouble?  A glance over at the bookshelves revealed that he hadn’t had to worry about the books, as the foam seemed to just work on growing up after the initial expansion.  He sighed in relief, knowing that he’d at least not have been put in debt for accidentally destroying something on his first day.  The helpful enivi from before returned, suppressing a bit of laughter.

“Oh, don’t worry too much about that.  Just means you’re not cut out for potions work.  We have Levitation lessons ready in the courtyard, if you’d like directions?”

Kresnica nodded, taking a bit of an upright and dignified stance, before actually answering the enivi.  “Directions would be appreciated.  I am glad that I did not manage to ruin the texts.  That would have been unfortunate.”

The helpful enivi finally burst into laughter.  “Oh, they’ve been waterproofed at the least.  This isn’t the first time someone’s cauldron overflowed.  At least it was just a foam?  I’ve seen someone fill the entire room with bubbles before.”  She managed to keep her laughter under control and smiled widely.  “So, you’ll want to turn right as you leave this room and follow the torches til you get to an iron barred door.  It’s not locked, and that’ll lead you to the courtyard where you can learn to levitate objects.  If you do need more help with directions, then just yell something and someone will appear.”

Kres nods, and exits the room, turning right and keeping to following the torches.  His hooves made a steady clicking noise as he walked, which was soon joined by a soft padding noise much quicker than he was.  He stopped for a brief moment, and the noise also stopped.  He seemed confused, until a sudden weight landed on his back, and a soft ‘mrow’ echod from behind his neck.  Twisting to take a look at the thing, he saw a tuxedo kalli, now settling onto his back and grooming where his hair met his neck, leaving somewhat smoother batches of fur.  He blinked once, and snorted.  The kalli started silently, and then went back to grooming.

“I am to take it that I’ve been adopted?”  The kalli started purring in response.  “I guess this means you’ll need a name.  Finn sound okay?”  Finn started kneading a little, and headbutt Kresnica.  “Since you’re in agreement, I guess we should head out to levitation lessons.”  he picked the pace back up, looking to actually attend another class that he hoped he’d fare better at.

I know I said this in the private comments, but this is fantastic! I love the way the picture and the story work so well together, and the reaction poor Kresnica has lol
